Warehouse managers generally use the Change Inventory Status (CISU) screen to adjust an item’s inventory status. However, warehouse managers have the option to choose another method to change inventory status. The Move Inventory (MI) screen can also be used to adjust inventory status.
In some cases, the Move Inventory (MI) screen method of adjusting inventory status can prove more useful than the Change Inventory Status (CISU) screen method. When adjusting inventory status using the Change Inventory Status (CISU) screen, the warehouse manager must adjust the status for all of the items on the inventory detail record. However, the warehouse manager can adjust status for only a portion of the items on the inventory detail record when using the Move Inventory (MI) screen method.
Using the MI Screen to Change Inventory Status
The warehouse manager can use the Move Inventory (MI) screen to adjust inventory status for an item. The warehouse manager simply enters either A for active or N for inactive in the INVENTORY STATUS field on the screen. When using the Move Inventory (MI) screen to adjust inventory status, the warehouse manager does not have to move items from one location to another in the system. The Move Inventory (MI) screen can be used solely to adjust inventory status.
To process this transaction,
the warehouse manager should:
| 1. | Type the warehouse and area identifiers corresponding to the current location of the inventory in the TO WAREHOUSE and TO AREA fields. |
| 2. | Type the quantity of the items being adjusted in the RCV QUANTITY field. |
| 3. | Type either A for active for N for inactive in the INV STS field. |
Using Documents Along With the CISU and MI Screens
When recording an inventory status adjustment on the Change Inventory Status (CISU) screen or Move Inventory (MI) screen, the warehouse manager can also attach a document to the items. The document can be used to explain the reason for status adjustment.
For example, 20 five-gallon, metal pails, item number 0004055, were damaged. The warehouse manager wants to mark these items temporarily inactive so that they can be repaired before they are allocated to orders. In addition to using the Change Inventory Status (CISU) screen to adjust inventory status for these items to inactive, the warehouse manager assigns a document number to the items. Because these items are assigned a document number, they are placed on a new inventory detail record. As a result, they are separated from other inactive pails in the system. The warehouse manager then adds document text to the document number to explain that the pails are temporarily inactive for repairs. Once the pails are repaired, the warehouse manager adjusts inventory status to active on the Change Inventory Status (CISU) screen and changes the document text to explain that the repairing process is complete. As a result, the items are no longer inactive. These items can now be allocated to orders.
In this section, you have learned how to change the status of inventory items in your warehouse. In the next section, you will learn to reconcile inventory. Reconciling inventory ensures that the on-hand balance of an item in the NCAS matches the physical quantity of the item in the warehouse.
