A warehouse manager can move or transfer items on an inventory detail record from one warehouse or warehouse area in the NCAS to another for any of the following reasons:
Recall that items with an expiration date will be allocated to orders first regardless of receipt date. After items with an established shelf life are allocated, all other items are allocated according to receipt date.
When an item is moved via the Move Inventory (MI) screen, the system assigns the item a new receipt date. The system records the date the item was moved, rather than the date the item was originally received, as the receipt date. This affects the process of First In First Out (FIFO) allocation. Although the item may have the oldest original receipt date, it may not be allocated to an order first because the system has a more recent date, the move date, recorded as the receipt date. In effect, the system will not truly allocate items according to the FIFO method.
This allocation error can be avoided. The warehouse manager can enter the original receipt date for the item in the RECEIPT DATE field on the Move Inventory (MI) screen. When the warehouse manager processes this change, the system will display a warning message. The message warns that “the receipt date entered is not equal to the current date.” However, the warehouse manager can ignore this message, and the system will accept the update. To ignore the message, the warehouse manager can type IGN in the REQUEST field on the Move Inventory (MI) screen. As a result, the oldest items will be allocated to orders before newer items.
