Storage areas are warehouse areas other than staging and receiving areas. Items are generally kept in a storage area until they are gathered to be shipped to a customer. A single warehouse may have multiple storage areas, especially if the warehouse is large. A warehouse is not required to have established storage areas. If a storage area is not defined for a warehouse in the NCAS, the system will store and maintain all inventory in the defined receiving area.
Because inventory is received into the receiving area of a warehouse, the warehouse manager must complete an online move or transfer of the items into the appropriate storage areas. Moving and transferring inventory will be presented in the Managing Inventory section of this course.
