Optimum Migration
Strategy
Migrating mission critical
applications from the legacy systems environment to the target environment
is a complex undertaking. The goal is a smooth migration path from
less flexible, more difficult-to-maintain, older systems to ones that use
the most appropriate and robust advanced technologies. A comprehensive
plan is necessary to understand and handle the complexity of the migration
process.

The OSC’s optimum migration
strategy is a phased, incremental approach. In this manner, the risk
typical of an initiative of this magnitude can be successfully managed.
The OSC’s migration strategy includes the following:
-
Data Warehouse/DSS expansion;
-
Evaluation of new technologies
and products; and
-
Replacement of current mainframe
applications.
This migration strategy will
provide the OSC the opportunity to focus on one initiative at a time as
well as to stage its information technology investments. Figure 22
illustrates the migration strategy and its timeframe.
